Do Not Give Statements To The Insurance Companies
In the legal world, silence is golden. If you or your family is involved in a car, truck, or motorcycle accident do not give any statements to the insurance company. Politely decline. Most adjusters are very nice, but their job is to save the insurance company as much money as possible. If you decline to make a statement you may see this happen.
They may threaten that without your statement it will be impossible to resolve your case. This is untrue. Insurance adjusters resolve cases every day without statements from their insured. If they need a statement, what do they do when their insured dies in an accident?
They may threaten that hiring a lawyer would also keep your case from resolving. That usually is not the case. Many times, adjusters undervalue the case based on formulas and statistics that they use to evaluate your case from a computer. As a former attorney for insurance companies and adjusters, I’m very familiar with the way that adjusters and insurance companies approach car accident cases.
The short answer is, if you think the adjuster is getting the case wrong, hire an attorney. It may make the adjuster’s job more difficult, but they deal with attorneys every day. Never forget, your insurance company makes billions of dollars per year. They do this by paying less than claims are worth.
